Planning

Music is an active and creative are of the curriculum and special thought needs to be given to the planning of musical activities if all young people are to make good progress.

Planning for a 'creative curriculum'

Teaching can be most effective when it is clear exactly what skills, knowledge and opportunities are planned for each stage in the musical development of a young person. The following links provide an example of such 'steps' in the progression from beginner to more experienced young musician within the seven 'elements' or 'concepts' of music:

The following file gives a whole set of 'steps of progression' for all seven elements within a single file - two formats are given:

A Microsoft Excel file (27KB) or an HTML file (43KB)

In additional to a consideration of the skills involved, we also need to be familiar with the National Curriculum. The following provides a suggestion for a possible long term plan of musical activities that could be delivered using a range of resources including Music ICT.

For MediumTerm Planning see Key Stage 1, Key Stage 2 or Key Stage 3

The New A & C Black scheme 'Music Express' is well supported with CD's, photocopiable pages and some elements of planning. The scheme is now widely available in the UK. The following link will provide a link between all the activities in the 6 years of the scheme with clear learning objectives and links to the National Curriculum:
